About HMWS&SB

HMWS&SB aka Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board provides construction services, design services, and management of water supply system services in Hyderabad, Telangana.

They’re responsible for providing safe drinking water and efficient sewerage services to the residents of Hyderabad.

Moreover, HMWS&SB undertakes projects to reduce water wastage, improve water infrastructure, oversee the operation and maintenance of the sewerage system, and promote sustainable water management practices within the area.

Role Of Water Meter At HMWS&SB

Sharath Kumar Reddy, Deputy General Manager at HMWS&SB takes pride in all that they have done for water conservation so far with the help of innovative technology like water meters.

They deal with the supply of drinking water for commercial uses or industrial uses, and they also treat the sewage that is produced by the domestic as well as the industrial customers. That’s how they can lay pipelines for regular supplies and deal with regular water supply and 24/7 mechanism of cleaning the drainage system.

The water meter support helps them look at it as a mechanized cleaning of drainage. They always quantify the water using meters. Moreover, they supply the water through tankers. As this is a basic essential commodity, they run around the pillar to post to supply adequate water to the customers.

Krishna and Godavari rivers are the major sources from where the city receives water and all the water that is being supplied to the city is treated water. They are proud to have treatment plants for treating the normal water and then converting it to domestic and commercial with good quality water.

Water & Wars For Water

Sharath adds, "Previously the water scarcity, especially in this jurisdiction, was very huge. We cannot even imagine how these industries are surviving. So, after 10 years, we are now enjoying the water as per the standards."

water can lead to wars

He quotes, "Water doesn’t see whether you’re rich or poor. Everyone needs water."

According to him, "Water wars happen when water usage is not sensitized. Different countries are proof wherein the water is being supplied through tankers or trains, even across the Maharashtrian state."

Thus, as Sharath says, "If water is not used wisely and if it is not quantified or measured by using the correct devices or the accuracy of tamper-proof devices, then there is scope for wars between people across the communities, states, and countries. So, water measurement and conservation are pivotal. For this, we make sure that all gated communities have sewerage treatment plants which are being generated by themselves to be treated and reused."

That’s how global water scarcity can be eradicated.

What Is HMWS&SB Doing To Save Water?

how hmwssb conserving water

For water conservation, water management and sustainable use of water, HMWS&SB initiated a campaign called WaLC (Water Leadership and Conservation). To restrict the usage of precious drinking water to all the other multi-purpose uses, WaLC by HMWS&SB came into existence. Under this campaign:

  • If the customer misuses water, he gets flagged in red color. It means that he is misusing water and doesn’t even have a smart meter.
  • In the upcoming visits, we then teach him to use the water efficiently. How? By educating on water conservation, how to use water wisely, and how to account for water in the future.
  • HMWS&SB also coordinates with NGOs and residential organizations to educate the public on how to use water effectively.
  • We believe it’s the responsibility of every individual to use water wisely because by using water wisely, we can eradicate the global water scarcity.
  • A lot can be done for water conservation by the construction of rainwater harvesting pits and recharge pits.

That’s how with simple ways and easy methods, water conservation takes center stage.

Here’s what Sharath says about installing smart water meter by Kritsnam:

Alerts and Notifications

The team takes pride in installing water meters called AMR meters at various locations. They are delighted to get regular and consistent alerts on the time period in which the device is active, water quantity supplied, volumetric alerts on water being supplied, and more. That’s how it enables them to scrutinize the water activities.

Month-End Readings

They are also very enthusiastic because the customers are well-connected with these meters. After all, now the team can focus on other responsibilities rather than just collecting data.

With these smart meters, all the data is gathered using the technology and once it is received by the team, they automatically account for the month-end bill.

Customer Grievance Resolution

Sharath remarks, “We, as a responsible water supply authority, are interested in obtaining data regarding usage by means of technologies. Using this data, we can come down with the number of grievances at the customer end, and we are very much interested in supplying the water digitally. That means everything must be automated and we must be capable of operating all the systems using a mobile app.’’
